The Holiday seasons are upon once again. The traditions of home and work will fill our coming days and weeks.
In all this, we hope that you start a new tradition with your family, co-workers, and families of the children in your care… taking the day after Thanksgiving, maybe even most of the weekend after Thanksgiving and spend some time outside!
The #OptOutside campaign started last year when outdoor recreation company REI chose to close its retail doors for BOTH Thanksgiving and the Friday after so their team members could spend time with their families outside!
Please take some time this coming holiday weekend to explore a county park or a state area near you with your family and #OptOutside. Grab some ideas from the activity database here on KinderNature.org and grab your nature pack and go!
Repurpose an old backpack and make a ‘nature pack’ that is always ready for the next adventure! You’ll want to make sure all your explorer’s tools are the right size for your children! Pack spoons, zippy bags, and clear plastic containers to temporarily hold treasurers! You can also purchase bug collectors and bug boxes, if you want. Add in a drawing tablet and crayons or colored pencils. Don’t forget your ‘TP Binoculars’ to help focus their attention! Make color chips from the color strips at the paint store so you can search for red, green, yellow, or blue items in nature! Add cardboard cut-outs of circle, triangle, and rectangle, too. Don’t forget wipes, sunscreen, and bug repellent. To help instill the idea that we always leave a place better than we found it… include a small sack for trash. Keep it handy by the door to grab on your wait out for an adventure.
