Green Leaves Make Food

Green Leaves Make Food

Materials

  • gray and green washable tempera paint
  • 2 or 3 inch foam topped brushes
  • bumpy balls
  • white paper
  • small index cards cut in half
  • aluminum cake pans for the green paint

Take the child on an exploratory walk outside.
Look at green leaves from different trees.
Compare the shades of greens.
Bring one leaf per child back into the classroom.
Once inside, help the children crumple their leaf.
Help them rub their leaf onto a small index card.
They should see a green stain on the card.
The stain was made by chlorophyll within the leaf.
Chlorophyll uses the sun and water to make food for the tree.

Children can paint their tree using the gray paint and the foam painters. Then they dip a bumpy ball into the green paint and bounce it all over the top of their tree to make leaves.

Very Fun!!!
