Story

Seed to Sunflower by Barbara Reid
Sunflower House by Eve Bunting

Background Information

Sunflowers can be collected in fields and ditches throughout Nebraska. Many farmers grow them as a crop. (I’ve seen them for sale in grocery stores during the fall as people use them as outdoor decorations.) If you have a garden at your site, it is fun for the children to plant the seeds and observe the flowers’ life cycle. Sunflower seeds are enjoyed by many different species of birds. Seeds are a good winter feed.

The children may want to set up a bird feeding station at your site using black oil sunflower seeds.

Activity

Tape the sunflower onto a wall.
Ask the child to stand next to the plant.
Use tape to mark the child’s height.
Write the child’s name on the tape and leave the tape on the wall for others to see.
