Create a Garden

Create a Garden

  • sponges cut into flower shapes
  • washable tempera paint in a variety of colors
  • wide brushes
  • white construction paper
  • bee and butterfly stickers
  • washable markers

Tell the children that bees and butterflies visit flowers to drink the sweet juice (nectar) that the flowers make. Many flowers have bright colors to attract these insects. Take an “eye spy” walk outside to see if the children can observe insects nectaring on flowers.

Help the children use the flower-shaped sponges to make a garden. They brush paint onto the sponge, position it, and print. Let them make several flowers.

When the children think that their garden is complete, they can add 5 sticker bee and butterfly visitors.

Older children may want to add details such as a sun, clouds, stems, leaves, grass, and other insects.
