Ladybug Sticker Fun
Materials
- red, orange, black, and white construction paper
- round sticker dots
- black markers
- scissors
- glue sticks
Background Information
It is best to do this activity after the children have had the opportunity to observe and play with live ladybugs.
The colors that a ladybug displays are a warning to predators that they taste nasty and that they can emit a bad smelling liquid from their back legs. (Ladybugs also turn over onto their back and play dead to fake out predators.)
Ladybug beetles come in several colors. Some have spots and others do not. You can download ladybug beetle pictures and make a set of picture cards for matching and memory games.
Activity
Each child will need a half piece and a quarter piece of 9” x 12” construction paper in the color of their choice.
Use the half piece first.
Show the children how to make the ladybug beetle’s body by drawing a corner to corner “hill” on their paper.
They can cut this out and put it aside.
Next they use the quarter piece of paper to draw a circle head and cut that out. (For younger children the pieces can be pre-cut.)
Children glue their ladybug beetles onto the white paper.
Let each child use a half sheet of stickers.
They can put all 9 or some on their ladybug beetle for spots.
(This is a good opportunity to practice counting skills.)
Use the markers to add legs and antennae.
They can give their ladybug beetle a face.
